A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, Chief Adegboyega Kolade, has resigned from the party, citing what he called destructive tendencies exhibited by the party’s leadership at the national and state levels.
Kolade’s resignation was contained in a letter dated July 18, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Ward 06, Mopamuro LGA, Kogi State.
His resignation comes barely two weeks after the PDP lost some of its frontline members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, particularly from the Western axis.
In the letter, Kolade who expressed disappointment with the party’s leadership, particularly named the Acting National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum; the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike; Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and other party officials, as responsible for the party’s current state.
Kolade, a lawyer who has been a member of the PDP since its formation in 1998, also cited internal crisis in the party and leadership style as reasons for his exit.
“I hereby tender my letter of resignation of membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“The reason for my resignation is no other than the destructive tendencies exhibited/being exhibited at the National level by Mr. Umar Iliya Damagum, the Acting Chairman of the Party, Mr. Nyesom Wike, Senator Natasha Akpoti, and her minions at the State and Local Government level,” Kolade stated in his letter.
The former PDP chieftain expressed appreciation to the party for the leadership opportunities given to him but lamented that the party’s current leadership has made it toothless and disorganised.
A member of the PDP in Kogi West, told our Correspondent in confidence that the resignation of Kolade was a significant blow to the party in Kogi State, hinting that his departure is likely to further weaken the party’s already fragile structure.
As reactions continue to trail the resignation of Chief Kolade, the PDP was however yet to issue an official statement on Chief Kolade’s resignation.
