Senator representing Kogi Central in the Senate, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has called for calm, dialogue and strict adherence to the rule of law following the arrest of Tracy Nicholas Ohiri over a dispute reportedly involving N250m debt by the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
In a statement issued Friday via her verified Facebook page, Akpoti-Uduaghan urged restraint amid heightened public interest in the controversy, which has sparked intense debate across social media platforms.
“I would like to specially appreciate every Nigerian who spoke out and stood up for Tracy Nicholas Ohiri regarding her arrest in connection with the Honourable Minister of Works, David Umahi,” the senator stated.
She described civic vigilance as essential in a democratic society and stressed that no individual should face coercion or intimidation for speaking out, particularly on allegations of harassment or misconduct.
“As a Senator and as a woman, I unequivocally condemn the use of force or intimidation to silence anyone, especially women who speak up about harassment or any form of misconduct,” she said.
The female lawmaker appealed for constructive engagement between the parties and encouraged a peaceful resolution of the matter.
“I respectfully appeal to the Minister, David Umahi, to meet with Tracy in good faith and work towards resolving any issues through dialogue,” she added.
Reaffirming her commitment to justice and due process, Akpoti-Uduaghan disclosed plans to personally intervene upon her return to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.
“Upon my return to Abuja, I shall seek an audience with both parties to discuss a possible resolution, as justice, dignity, and the rule of law must always guide our actions,” she affirmed.
The controversy intensified earlier in the week after a viral video surfaced in which Ohiri alleged assault and non-payment for campaign materials supplied during Ebonyi State governorship campaign in 2015. The footage has since circulated widely online, fueling calls for transparency, accountability and respect for constitutional rights.
Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, has denied allegations that he deployed police officers against Ohiri to settle a disagreement over alleged campaign debts. In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, the minister described Ohiri’s claims as “inconsistent, contradictory and lacking coherence.”
According to the statement, the police acted within their constitutional mandate to maintain law and order after receiving a petition submitted by the minister’s lawyer. It added that Ohiri was arrested in line with standard investigative procedures and that Umahi was also invited to provide his statement.
