Kwankwasiyya Blames Government Interference For Kano Anti-Graft Chairman’s Resignation

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has blamed alleged government interference for the resignation of the chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), Saidu Yahaya.

The movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Mohammed, said on Wednesday that Yahaya resigned after allegedly being prevented from independently discharging his responsibilities as chairman of the state anti-graft agency.

Mohammed said Yahaya had raised questions over local government funds, projects and other government expenditures, adding that his perceived affiliation with the Kwankwasiyya Movement further complicated his position.

“He wanted to discharge his responsibility. Fighting corruption is not an easy task, and because he was asking so many questions, those questions relate to government officials, local government spending, projects and oversight functions,” Mohammed said.

He alleged that the government subsequently frustrated Yahaya’s efforts because of concerns that his activities could expose alleged wrongdoing within the administration.

According to Mohammed, Yahaya eventually resigned rather than remain in an environment where he could not perform his statutory duties independently.

He described the resignation as a “great sacrifice,” saying Yahaya had demonstrated integrity by refusing to be used to cover up wrongdoing.

Yahaya’s resignation was reported on Wednesday amid allegations that he had come under pressure over his activities as chairman of the commission.

However, neither Yahaya nor the Kano State Government has publicly stated the reason for his resignation.

The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Abdullahi Waiya, who was contacted for the government’s reaction, promised to respond but had yet to do so as of press time.

Meanwhile, the state government has appointed Barrister Hafsat Ada’u Kutama, the immediate past Secretary of the commission, as acting chairman.

The appointment was announced by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Social Media, Ibrahim Adam, on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday.

Yahaya was appointed chairman of the commission in August 2025, following the expiration of the tenure of his predecessor, Muhuyi Magaji Rimin Gado.

His appointment was subsequently confirmed by the Kano State House of Assembly for a five-year tenure.
