Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.
Kwankwaso disclosed this in a statement dated March 29, 2026, where he described his decision as difficult but necessary in view of the evolving political situation in the country.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he stated.
The former governor, who also served as the party’s national leader, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to represent the NNPP as its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
He said the current trajectory of Nigeria’s political landscape has made it imperative for him to seek a new platform.
“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he added.
Kwankwaso thanked the party’s national chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as members of the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and other party leaders at all levels for their support during his time in the NNPP.
He also acknowledged the contributions of members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, noting their dedication to the party’s ideals and shared vision.
Despite his exit, Kwankwaso expressed optimism about continued collaboration with stakeholders to advance national development and build a more prosperous Nigeria.
