Kwara Justice Ministry Law Officers Begin Indefinite Strike 

Law officers in the Kwara State Ministry of Justice have embarked on an indefinite strike over the alleged non-payment of statutory allowances and the state’s failure to harmonise their salaries and conditions of service with those of magistrates.

The industrial action, which took effect on Monday, was announced by the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kwara State Chapter, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

In a notice made available to journalists in Ilorin, the association directed all its members to immediately withdraw their services until the government addresses their demands.

The notice, signed by the association’s Acting Chairman, Kehinde Ayorinde, read, “Please, take notice that LOAN, Kwara State Chapter, commences her indefinite strike action today, July 27, 2026, until the government responds to her demands.

“Members would therefore suspend all official duties till further notice.”

The association accused the state government of failing to pay the outstanding balance of its members’ 2020 furniture allowance as well as robe allowances for 2024, 2025 and 2026.

It also alleged that the government had yet to implement the approved harmonisation of salaries, allowances and conditions of service for state counsel with those of magistrates in the state judiciary.

According to the law officers, repeated appeals to Governor AbdulRazaq and the Office of the Head of Service have failed to produce any meaningful response, despite assurances given after a three-day warning strike in October 2025.

The association said its members perform critical functions within the justice sector, including prosecuting criminal cases, providing legal advice to government ministries and agencies, drafting legislation and recovering public revenue through the prosecution of tax defaulters.

It maintained that the indefinite strike became inevitable after the state government failed to address the issues raised before the expiration of the ultimatum.
