La Liga has strongly condemned the threats and intimidation directed at Sevilla players and directors by their own fans following the club’s third consecutive league defeat.
Sevilla, currently 17th in the Spanish top flight, suffered a 1-0 loss away to bottom-of-the-table Real Oviedo on Sunday. Upon their return, some supporters met the team at the airport to hurl insults, while others, wearing masks, were present at the club’s training ground.
In a statement, LaLiga declared this behaviour “unacceptably crosses the line of legitimate criticism and sporting expression.” The league noted a similar incident earlier in the season where some Sevilla fans attempted to force their way into the training ground to confront players.
LaLiga confirmed they would report the incident to Spanish authorities and vowed to take further action against similar occurrences. “Anyone who crosses the line from criticism into threats, intimidation, or harassment stops acting as a fan and starts acting as a violent individual,” LaLiga added. “And against violent individuals, LaLiga acts and will act.”
Sevilla, now winless in five matches, are precariously positioned just two points above the relegation zone with eight games left in the season.
