The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) yesterday blamed Governor Godwin Obaseki’s security framework for failing to stop the kidnap of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, who spent 11 days with his kidnappers before he was released two days ago.

A press statement by the Edo State publicity secretary of Labour Party, Comrade Sam Uroupa, said while they  rejoice with Aziegbemi and his family over his safe return from the kidnappers’ den, the inability of the government to protect its own members raises serious concerns about its capacity to ensure the safety of all citizens.

“This incident serves as a catalyst for the Labour Party to sound the alarm on the prevailing security rot within the PDP government in Edo State. The party firmly states that a government that cannot secure its high-ranking officials cannot be entrusted with the well-being of ordinary citizens.”

He reiterated the party’s commitment under its candidate, Olamide Akpata, to “prioritizing the welfare and security of all individuals, regardless of their status. The lives and properties of both the common man and the high-ranking official are of equal importance and deserve adequate protection. When voted into power come September 21st, 2024, LP will not engage in political gamesmanship with the lives of the people of Edo State but will steadfastly advocate for a safe and secure environment for all residents.”

The party outlined one of its governorship agenda to focus on enhancing security measures and promoting the welfare of the people of Edo State if elected into power.

He said this “serves as a strong statement against security lapses, advocating for a government that prioritizes citizens’ safety above all else. The party’s unwavering commitment to addressing security challenges and safeguarding the well-being of the people underscores its vision for a secure and thriving Edo State.”
