Lafarge Africa To Expand Sagamu, Ashaka Plants With Energy-efficient Technology

Lafarge Africa Plc has announced plans to expand its Sagamu Cement Plant in Ogun State and Ashaka Cement Plant in Gombe State as part of efforts to strengthen local cement production and improve operational efficiency.

The company said the two new production lines will be dry plants equipped with preheater kilns, vertical raw mills and roller presses for cement mills, aimed at improving energy efficiency and environmental performance.

In a notice to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), signed by the Company Secretary, Adewunmi Alode, Lafarge Africa stated that the expansion of the Ashaka and Sagamu plants is expected to raise production capacity to 2 million metric tonnes per annum and 3.5 million metric tonnes per annum, respectively, upon completion.

According to the company, the increased capacity is expected to improve product availability and enhance its ability to serve customers across key markets.

The expansion follows the announcement last year that Huaxin Building Materials Group acquired an 83.81 per cent stake in Lafarge Africa Plc, a development the company said underscores its continued commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructure development.

Commenting on the projects, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said the expansions reflect the company’s long-term confidence in Nigeria’s growth potential and its intention to support the country’s infrastructure and construction needs.

He said the projects are designed to deliver both operational and sustainability benefits, while also supporting value creation for customers and shareholders and contributing to economic activity and job creation in host communities.

Alade-Akinyemi added that the expansion would strengthen the company’s supply chain, improve responsiveness to market demand, and support critical sectors, including housing, commercial construction, and infrastructure.
