In a statement issued by the founder of Asa Day Worldwide Inc, Canada and Oloro of Oro Kingdom, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye, he highlighted the significance of the indigenous history of Lagos State.

The monarch emphasised that the history of indigenous people of Lagos is an invaluable asset that deserves recognition, preservation and elevation on the global stage.

Oyatoye stated that the upcoming cultural promotion and preservation event, titled ‘Asa Day’, is a joint effort between the state government and Asa Day Worldwide to highlight the state’s cultural assets.

The event, with the theme, “Raising the Bar of Lagos Indigenous Cultural Heritage,” will take place on Monday, December 16, in Lagos.

Oyatoye disclosed that the state’s commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson Awoyinka, is the chief host of the event while Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will be the special guest for the occasion.

“Today, we stand united in our commitment to raise the bar of Lagos’ indigenous cultural heritage, ensuring it thrives for generations to come. Lagos, known for its vibrant and dynamic urban landscape, also holds a deep cultural legacy that spans centuries.

“The indigenous cultures of the Yoruba people, along with their traditions, languages, festivals, music, dance and crafts, are central to the identity of Lagos. Yet, as the city continues to grow and evolve, it is essential to ensure that these traditions are not lost in the rush of modernity but are instead celebrated and passed on in a way that honours both their historical importance and their relevance in today’s world,” the statement read in part.

He revealed the event is meant to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Lagos’ indigenous heritage and to create a bridge between the past, present and future of the city.

“Our goal is not only to protect and preserve but also to celebrate the unique identity of Lagos, ensuring that its cultural legacy shines brightly for generations to come,” Oyatoye added.
