Lagos Flooding Triggers Power Outages as TCN Shuts Down Oworonshoki Substation

Heavy flooding caused by persistent rainfall has disrupted electricity supply in parts of Lagos State after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) declared force majeure at two major transmission substations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, TCN said the flooding had severely affected its Oworonshoki 133/33KV Transmission Substation and also impacted operations at the Lekki 330/132KV Transmission Substation.

According to the company’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the Oworonshoki substation has been taken out of service after floodwater submerged critical equipment, affecting two power transformers.

The affected transformers, identified as TR1 (60 MVA) and TR3 (30 MVA), reportedly tripped despite attempts to restore them. TCN also disclosed that the protection and control cables connected to both transformers remain underwater, making restoration efforts difficult as rainfall continues.

While the Lekki Transmission Substation is still operational, the company said engineers are continuously pumping out floodwater to keep the facility running.

TCN added that its technical team is working to drain the flooded Oworonshoki site and carry out tests on the affected transformers before power can be safely restored.

The company apologised for the disruption and assured customers supplied through the affected substations that every effort is being made to restore electricity as quickly as possible.
