The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of N701,054,344.57 to 232 families of public servants who died while in active service, as part of its insurance benefits scheme.
The beneficiaries received their cheques on Friday at a presentation ceremony held in Ikeja, organised by the Ministry of Finance in collaboration with LASACO Assurance and a consortium of underwriters and bankers. Some families were paid as much as N15 million.
Speaking at the event, the commissioner for finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for sustaining policies that prioritise the welfare of public servants and their families.
“Let me begin by sincerely appreciating our governor for his consistent support for workers and their families and for championing policies that put people at the centre of government decisions,” he said, adding that staff welfare under the current administration is reflected in tangible actions.
Oluyomi described the occasion as both solemn and significant, noting that while it marked the painful loss of valued workers, it also represented the fulfilment of government’s promise to their families.
“Today is both a painful and an important day—painful because we remember loved ones who are no longer with us; important because we are here to keep a promise made to them and to you,” he said.
He emphasised that the Lagos State Insurance Scheme was designed to ensure families are not left without support in the event of unexpected loss, adding that the payments symbolise recognition of the deceased workers’ years of dedicated service.
“The cheques presented today are not just figures—they represent recognition of the years of loyal service your loved ones gave to the state. They also send a clear message that the government stands with you in this difficult time,” he added.
The commissioner assured serving public officers of the administration’s commitment to their welfare, pledging transparency and prompt processing of all entitlements. He also urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds to support education, businesses, and household stability.
