Detectives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of Lagos State Police Command have arrested one Omotayo Iwajomo with an AK-49 assault rifle along with several rounds of ammunition.
The arrest followed a coordinated and intelligence-led raid in the Ajegunle area of Ikorodu area of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Lagos Command, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
According to Hundeyin, the detectives acting on intelligence on 15th July, 2025, stormed a criminal hideout in the Ajegunle area of the Ikorodu general area.
“During the operation, the team arrested the suspect in possession of one AK-49 assault rifle, three magazines, fifteen rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, three rounds of 9mm (K2) ammunition, and two rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition.”
Hundeyin said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had been actively involved in armed robbery and land-grabbing activities across various parts of Lagos State, using the recovered firearm to perpetrate his crimes.
The Lagos PPRO added that further investigations revealed that the suspect has accomplices.
He added that efforts were being intensified to apprehend other members of the criminal syndicate and to charge all involved in court after the investigation to face the full weight of the law.
Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olohundare Jimoh, commended detectives of the State Criminal Investigation Department for their professionalism and swift action.
Jimoh reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to proactive, intelligence-led policing and warned criminal elements that Lagos will remain a hostile environment for unlawful activities.
In a similar vein, the State Command has deployed anti-cultism squads in all area commands across the state in its bid to tackle the menace of cultism.
Spokesman of the police in the state said the squads have been equipped to respond swiftly and professionally to cultism-related threats and tasked with conducting surveillance, responding to distress calls, apprehending cultism suspects, and working with local communities to dismantle cultism networks.
CP Jimoh urged members of the public to play an active role in this effort by providing credible intelligence as quickly as possible with all reports treated with utmost confidentiality.
