The Lagos State Government has said that it will arraign 62 suspects arrested during a midnight enforcement operation by the state’s Environmental Taskforce across several parts of Lagos Island.

The sweeping raid, which began at 1:30am on Friday, targeted known hotspots, including Victoria Island, Falomo, the Eko Hotel axis, Osborne, and adjoining streets. Authorities said the operation was part of a renewed effort to rid public spaces of criminal elements and restore order.

In a statement shared via his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, described the arrests as a critical step in sanitising the state’s commercial and entertainment hub.

“In continuation of the agency’s clean-up enforcement operation to rid the State of criminal elements, operatives of the Environmental Taskforce team set out at about 0130hrs on Friday, 23rd May 2025 and embarked on its ongoing clean-up enforcement operation on the Island,” Wahab wrote.

He added that the operation focused on areas where disruptive and suspicious behaviour had reportedly escalated in recent weeks.

“The areas visited during the operation include Victoria Island, Falomo, Eko Hotel, Osborne and other adjoining streets where the presence of some undesirable elements was noticed,” he said.

A total of 62 suspects, comprising 59 males and three females were arrested during the raid. The Commissioner noted that the action immediately restored calm to the affected areas.

“Sanity was restored in all the areas,” Wahab noted, affirming that all arrested individuals will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Lagos State Government has repeatedly warned against the occupation of public spaces by individuals considered a threat to security, vowing to sustain enforcement efforts across the city.
