The deputy chairman, public accounts committee of the House of Representatives, Hon. Jeremiah Umaru, has pledged to support the Rotary Club of Abuja CBD (Central Business District) in executing its intervention programmes, aimed at bringing succour to the under privileged.
This is just as the new president of the club, Lauratu Yenwan, revealed plans to execute projects worth N46.22 million in line with Rotary’s seven areas of focus.
The lawmaker representing Akwanga/Nasarawa/Eggon/Wamba federal constituency made the pledge during the start of Rotary Year and Investiture/hand over ceremony of the CBD Club in Abuja at the weekend.
Umaru noted that Rotary Club generally and internationally was about service to humanity as well as giving back to society, hence his resolve to support the club in achieving its laudable programmes.
He acknowledged the club’s activities in Nasarawa State, assuring that the legislature was ever ready to support initiatives that promote health, education and other interventions especially at the grassroots.
“Our message for the president is that Rotary Club is about giving back. It’s about service, selfless service to humanity. We’ll partner, we’ll walk shoulder to shoulder to give her all the necessary support to achieve her objectives.
“For us (lawmakers) whether in public accounts or whatever, healthcare is very key in all aspects. Once we get it right in our healthcare system, I tell you, so many of our challenges will be solved. Because we have people in the grassroots, in the communities that don’t have access to basic healthcare facilities.
“Anything that has to do with healthcare, in terms of budgetary provisions, in terms of requests, in terms of so many things, we take it as an emergency because it’s key to our survival. It’s key to our well-being. Another aspect is education but I don’t want to dwell into the education because we are talking about healthcare,” Umaru said.
The new president, Yenwan, said the projects to be executed with the proposed N46.22 million cover basic education/literacy, peace/conflict resolution, maternal/child health, environment and water/sanitation.
