LEADERSHIP Group has formally apologised to Williams Etuk Bassey over a May 31, 2023 publication on its online site titled “Coalition of CSOs Suspends Bassey as President, Appoints Oladimeji.” The newspaper admitted that standards were not followed in the publication of the story.

In a letter signed by the Management, the newspaper said there was no intention to defame or castigate Bassey.

LEADERSHIP Group noted that corrective measures have been taken, including the removal of the contentious story from all its online platforms.

The letter reads in part: “Please note that it was never our desire to malign or maliciously castigate you in any way. We regret that we were misled by our sources, and we had no reason to doubt the same at the time.

“We wish to further state that we have taken all necessary steps to redeem the situation. Accordingly, kindly be aware that we have taken down the story in question from all our online platforms, and have published a retraction and apology highlighting our error.”
