He promised MORE — and delivered far more than expected.
A Governor with a Plan, A State on the Move
When Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori took the oath of office as Governor of Delta State on May 29, 2023, he didn’t come to experiment.
He came with a clear roadmap — the MORE Agenda — a development philosophy that stands for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
Two years later, Delta State is visibly transformed. From roads and flyovers to schools and hospitals, from fiscal discipline to human capital growth, Governor Oborevwori has shown that governance, when planned and executed with empathy, can change lives.
From the Legislature to Leadership
Born on June 19, 1963, Sheriff Oborevwori is no stranger to public service.
Before becoming governor, he was Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, where he earned a reputation for fairness, stability, and deep understanding of governance.
That legislative experience became the foundation of his administrative success. It equipped him to balance vision with consultation, ambition with prudence — qualities that have defined his leadership style and endeared him to the people.
The MORE Agenda in Action
Governor Oborevwori’s “MORE Agenda” is not just a slogan; it’s a practical blueprint that cuts across every sector of governance.
Under his leadership:
Over 513 road projects spanning nearly 1,500 kilometres have been completed or are ongoing.
Landmark flyovers such as the PTI Junction, Enerhen, DSC Roundabout, and Effurun Flyovers have reshaped the state’s urban landscape.
These projects, distributed across all three senatorial districts, reflect a deliberate policy of equitable development — no community left behind.
But his vision extends beyond asphalt and bridges. It’s about connecting people, not just places; building trust, not just infrastructure.
“Development must mean something to everyone, everywhere in Delta,” the governor once said — and that spirit runs through every initiative he leads.
Education as the Cornerstone of Growth
Recognising that the foundation of progress is education, the Oborevwori administration has made record investments in schools and training.
From renovating classroom blocks, laboratories, and ICT centres to hiring over 5,500 new teaching and non-teaching staff, Delta’s education sector is being retooled for the future.
More than N1 billion in bursaries has been disbursed to over 60,000 students, while technical colleges and vocational centres have been upgraded to equip youths with practical, employable skills.
The message is clear: in Oborevwori’s Delta, no child should be left behind.
Healthcare That Heals and Reassures
Delta’s healthcare system has equally witnessed a revolution under his watch. Primary healthcare centres across all 25 local government areas are being renovated, modernised, and equipped.
The Asaba Specialist Hospital now boasts world-class diagnostic facilities, including MRI, CT, and dialysis units.
“This is a major step forward in our commitment to providing world-class healthcare to the people of Delta State,” declared Dr. Peace Ighosewe, the hospital’s chief medical director.
Health insurance coverage has been expanded, and the Delta Contributory Health Scheme now reaches thousands of vulnerable citizens who previously had no access to formal care.
Empowerment Through Opportunity
True to his “Opportunities for All” pledge, Governor Oborevwori’s administration has rolled out bold initiatives in youth and women empowerment.
Through programmes like MORE Biz-Up and Delta-CARES, thousands of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises have received grants, tools, and training.
Over 250,000 Deltans have benefitted from social welfare interventions targeting farmers, artisans, women, and persons with disabilities.
In agriculture, he’s investing in mechanisation, farm inputs, and credit access — not as welfare but as a pathway to self-reliance.
Young farmers now work in cooperative clusters, producing food and creating jobs across the state.
Fiscal Discipline, Peace, and Good Governance
Governor Oborevwori’s leadership has also redefined public finance. He introduced digital budget tracking, streamlined the civil service, and implemented the new N77,500 minimum wage for workers — one of the first states in Nigeria to do so.
By prioritising transparency and accountability, he cleared long-standing pension arrears through a N40 billion facility and digitised payroll systems to eliminate ghost workers.
These reforms have boosted staff morale and earned Delta a reputation for financial prudence.
In matters of security and stability, he remains a bridge-builder. Through consistent dialogue with youth groups, traditional rulers, and community leaders, he has sustained peace in a state once burdened by restiveness.
His government’s support for security agencies has strengthened law enforcement and made Delta one of the safest states in the South-South.
Beyond the State: Expanding Delta’s Horizon
Governor Oborevwori is also looking outward. His recent investment mission to China underscored his ambition to place Delta on the global economic map.
The trip focused on partnerships in energy, technology, and infrastructure, particularly leveraging Delta’s gas reserves for cleaner energy and industrial expansion.
He has also modernised the judiciary with new High Court complexes, improved welfare for judges, and digitalised case management — all in pursuit of an efficient justice system.
Recognitions and Legacy
His efforts have not gone unnoticed. In just two years, Governor Oborevwori has been named:
Silverbird Governor of the Year (2023)
ThisDay/Arise Governor of the Year (2024)
Vanguard Governor of the Year (Infrastructure) 2024
Each award recognises not just performance, but consistency — a man whose humility matches his achievements.
