For delivering a performance of remarkable consistency, resilience and competitive excellence on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages, while emerging as Africa’s highest-ranked nation, Team Nigeria’s contingent to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is the Sports Persons of the Year 2026.

Nigeria’s participation in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games marked the nation’s 16th appearance at the prestigious multi-sport event, extending a proud sporting tradition that began with its debut at the 1950 British Empire Games. For more than seven decades, the Commonwealth Games have provided Nigerian athletes with an important platform to demonstrate their abilities, affirm their international competitiveness and inspire successive generations. Glasgow 2026 added another distinguished chapter to that enduring legacy.

Team Nigeria returned from Scotland with an impressive haul of 24 medals—10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze—finishing seventh overall on the final medal table. More significantly, Nigeria emerged as the highest-ranked African nation at the Games. The performance matched the country’s seventh-place finish at Birmingham 2022, reinforcing Nigeria’s standing among the Commonwealth’s leading sporting nations.

Yet the significance of the Glasgow campaign extends well beyond the headline medal tally.

Unlike Birmingham 2022, which featured a considerably broader sporting programme, Glasgow 2026 was staged in a more compact format, with fewer sports and fewer medal events. Nigeria also competed with a smaller delegation, sending 72 athletes to Glasgow, compared with 94 at Birmingham. Against this backdrop, retaining seventh position overall and maintaining its status as Africa’s leading sporting nation represented a notable achievement and a powerful testament to the quality, depth and competitiveness of Team Nigeria.

At Birmingham 2022, Nigeria won 35 medals—11 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze. However, the reduced programme in Glasgow inevitably created fewer opportunities for medal-winning performances. The 24-medal haul should therefore not be assessed in isolation, but against the scale of the competition, the smaller Nigerian contingent and the country’s ability to remain firmly entrenched among the Commonwealth’s sporting elite despite a more restricted competitive environment.

The Glasgow campaign was further distinguished by the breadth and diversity of Nigeria’s success. Across athletics, weightlifting, para-sports, judo and other disciplines, Nigerian athletes demonstrated technical excellence, courage, discipline and an unwavering competitive spirit. Their achievements went beyond the statistics, delivering performances that reinforced Nigeria’s reputation as one of Africa’s most formidable sporting nations.

Athletics once again underpinned Nigeria’s medal ambitions, with athletes delivering memorable performances against some of the Commonwealth’s finest competitors. Nigeria’s para-athletes were equally outstanding, demonstrating the resilience, determination and exceptional talent that have consistently made the country a force in para-sport.

Weightlifting continued to affirm Nigeria’s traditional strength in power events, while judo added valuable depth to the overall medal campaign. Together, these performances reflected a sporting contingent whose strength was not confined to a single discipline but spanned a range of competitive events.

Perhaps one of the most encouraging aspects of Nigeria’s Glasgow outing was the evolving balance within the team. At Birmingham 2022, Nigerian women were the principal drivers of the country’s gold-medal success, winning all of the nation’s gold medals. However, at Glasgow, male athletes made a stronger contribution.

This development is particularly significant because it suggests a broader and increasingly diverse medal-winning base. Nigeria is demonstrating a greater capacity to produce elite performers across genders and sporting disciplines, a trend that could prove vital to the country’s future success on the international stage.

The achievement also speaks eloquently to the athletes’ character.

Behind every medal lay months—and, in many cases, years—of preparation, sacrifice and disciplined effort. Behind every victory stood coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, families and supporters whose contributions formed part of each athlete’s journey. Every Nigerian competitor who stepped onto the field of play carried not only personal ambitions but also the hopes and expectations of millions of compatriots.

For those who reached the podium, their medals represented the culmination of extraordinary commitment. For those who narrowly missed out, their efforts nevertheless contributed to the collective strength, visibility and prestige of Nigerian sport. Together, they demonstrated that sporting excellence is measured not solely by medals but also by courage under pressure, professionalism, perseverance, and the determination to compete at the highest level.

Team Nigeria’s Glasgow 2026 campaign should therefore be recognised as more than another successful medal-winning outing. It was a statement of sustained sporting relevance and national capability. The contingent upheld Nigeria’s proud Commonwealth Games tradition, matched the country’s previous seventh-place ranking, retained its status as Africa’s number one sporting nation, and secured 10 gold medals despite a significantly reduced programme.

More importantly, the campaign demonstrated the capacity of Nigerian athletes to adapt to changing competitive circumstances without surrendering their place among the Commonwealth’s best.

For its resilience in the face of a reduced Games programme; excellence across multiple sporting disciplines; outstanding individual and collective performances; increasingly balanced contributions from male and female athletes; remarkable achievements in para-sport; and, above all, its ability to retain Nigeria’s position as Africa’s leading sporting nation, Team Nigeria’s Contingent to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games is the Sports Persons of the Year 2026.
