Polish striker Robert Lewandowski is set to embark on a new chapter in his illustrious career, with the 37-year-old having agreed to join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire, according to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano.
The veteran forward, who departed Barcelona following the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, visited the club and the city of Chicago two weeks ago as part of the negotiation process. Sources indicate that the move is now in its final stages, with Lewandowski expected to put pen to paper early next week.
Romano confirmed the development stating that the Polish international is fully committed to the switch and eager to begin his MLS adventure. The deal represents a significant coup for the Chicago Fire, who have secured one of the most prolific goalscorers of his generation.
Lewandowski’s departure from Barcelona brings an end to his stint in Spain, where he joined from Bayern Munich in 2022.
During his time at Camp Nou, the veteran striker continued to demonstrate his trademark finishing ability, though the club’s financial struggles and shifting tactical direction ultimately paved the way for his exit.
The Polish marksman boasts a storied career across Europe’s elite leagues. He rose to prominence at Borussia Dortmund, where he won two Bundesliga titles and reached the 2013 UEFA Champions League final.
His subsequent move to Bayern Munich cemented his legacy as one of football’s greatest strikers, with eight consecutive Bundesliga crowns, a Champions League triumph in 2020, and a record-breaking 41-goal season in 2020/21 that earned him the FIFA Best Men’s Player award.
At international level, Lewandowski has amassed over 150 caps for Poland, becoming the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer. However, he did not feature in the ongoing FIFA World Cup after Poland failed to qualify for the tournament, a disappointment that may have influenced his decision to seek a new challenge across the Atlantic.
The Chicago Fire, who have struggled for consistency in recent MLS seasons, will view Lewandowski’s arrival as a transformative moment for the franchise.
His experience, leadership, and goalscoring pedigree are expected to elevate the team’s attacking output while also generating significant commercial and fan interest in the club.
Lewandowski is set to become one of the highest-profile players in MLS history, joining a growing list of European stars who have chosen to conclude their careers in the United States. He follows in the footsteps of Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, Zlatan Ibrahimović at LA Galaxy, and his former Bayern teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, who also played for Chicago Fire.
The transfer is expected to be finalised in the coming days, with Lewandowski poised to be unveiled as the Fire’s newest designated player. He will likely make his debut in the coming weeks as Chicago looks to climb the Eastern Conference standings and reignite their playoff ambitions.
For Lewandowski, the move represents not just a final payday but a chance to grow football’s footprint in North America while adding another chapter to a career already defined by records, trophies, and an insatiable hunger for goals.
