Governor Alia said the declaration was necessitated by his desire to give the electorate ample opportunity to travel to their respective local government areas to exercise their franchise.

He emphasised the importance of active participation in the electoral process and encouraged all citizens to take advantage of the work-free day to exercise their civic duty.

Alia also expressed confidence that with the right commitment and participation, the elections will be conducted smoothly and fairly.

A statement by the Chief press secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula quoted Governor Alia as charging all public and private sectors and organisations to support the government by allowing their employees to utilise the day for travel and preparation for the election.
