The death toll after the floods caused by a huge Mediterranean storm that burst dams in Libya, especially in the eastern coastal city of Derna, reached about 6000 on Wednesday, report says.

More than 10,000 people are also missing from the severe flood which swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of a city.

“The death toll is huge and might reach thousands,” Tamer Ramadan of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said.

LEADERSHIP reports that some aid had started to arrive, including from Egypt, but rescue efforts were hampered by the political situation in Libya, with the country split between two rival governments.
