Argentina captain Lionel Messi has made history as the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after taking his tally to 17 goals in the mundial.

The milestone saw Messi moved past Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals at the tournament, to claim sole ownership of the record.

Messi now sits atop the all-time World Cup scoring chart ahead of Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário with 15 goals, while France’s Kylian Mbappé and Germany’s Gerd Müller were tied on 14 goals each.

France’s Just Fontaine occupies the next spot with 13 goals, while Brazilian great Pelé scored 12 times at football’s biggest tournament.

The latest achievement adds another remarkable chapter to Messi’s illustrious career, with the Argentine forward now holding the distinction of being the most prolific scorer in World Cup history.
