The Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) has donated a range of medical items to Wuse General Hospital, aimed at improving maternal and newborn care services in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The donation, carried out in Abuja yesterday , included hospital beds, materials for mothers and newborns, and other essential medical supplies.
At the presentation, the president of Lions International District 404A2 Region 2 Zone 2, Mrs Farida Anwar, said the initiative was executed by the Wuse Abuja Lions Club through support from an LCIF grant.
She expressed joy at the impact of the intervention, noting that the club remains committed to supporting vulnerable groups, especially mothers and newborns.
“We are happy to bring relief and support to mothers and babies. We have carried out many humanitarian projects like this, and we will continue to serve humanity,” she said.
Mrs Anwar emphasised that such efforts complement government initiatives, adding that charitable organisations must step in to bridge critical gaps in healthcare delivery.
She further highlighted past interventions by the Lions Club, including the adoption of hospital wards and the establishment of a diabetes centre in Gwarinpa General Hospital.
According to her, these projects are funded through contributions from members and support from individuals and partners, as the organisation does not receive government funding.
She, however, called for increased public support to enable the club to expand its reach and assist more communities.
Also, Ngwu Ikeshikwu, head of Work (HSES), representing the Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, commended the Lions Club for its impactful contribution.
He noted that the Mandate Secretary, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, was unable to attend due to other official engagements but expressed appreciation on her behalf.
Ngwu described the intervention as timely and significant, particularly in improving the postnatal ward, which has been renovated, equipped and made more conducive for patients.
He reiterated the FCT administration’s commitment to healthcare under the Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting ongoing initiatives such as free malaria testing and treatment across the territory.
“No resident of the FCT should suffer from malaria. Testing and treatment are completely free. We urge the public to take advantage of this and also maintain a clean environment,” he said
In his remarks, the medical director of Wuse District Hospital, Dr Chidi Nabuchi, expressed appreciation to the Lions Club for the intervention.
He described the project as transformative, noting that the foundation renovated the ward, repainted the facility, upgraded plumbing, replaced beds and donated essential equipment including blood pressure monitors, glucometers, drip stands ward screens, and curtains.
