Kickstarting a house, office and general multipurpose cleaning business might be a way to keep afloat in a society where several are suffering from unemployment.

For a newbie in this type of business, one can start by oneself to cut costs at the beginning by doing the initial cleaning jobs alone.

One needs to have the prerequisite knowledge of what the cleaning business entails before it can be successful from afar. Hence, a way to land the first few clients is by asking friends and family who might be interested in such services or reference to others who might need the homes/offices cleaned or rugs washed.

In a chat with the GM, Koplus Cleaning Services Ltd, Kolade Joseph, he stated that, to start a cleaning business, the operator needs to commit to sourcing and working for your first few clients on your own which will ensure you keep your costs low as well.

“Instead of investing money in hiring workers, you can pay yourself a reasonable amount while you stick by your work schedule and business model to factor in the pricing for services.

“I will tell you for free, if you start as a one-man business and do your work diligently, you earn the trust of your clientele and more referrals will come from them. Once the business begins to pick up, you can get more hands to get jobs done and faster as well.,” he says.

It is imperative to note that starting a cleaning service company can be a lucrative business venture.

Joseph advises that the operator should define the types of services that will be well offered and the level of specialisation as well. This help to  focus on core businesses or choose to offer regular cleaning services, deep cleaning, or specialized tasks cleaning for construction sites and so

He, however, states  that creating and developing a business plan outlining the cleaning business goals, target market, marketing strategies, operational processes, and financial projections will make the business thrive when they are fully executed.

Obtaining all required licenses and permits required by the local government and state government is important as well to set the business on legal and sound footing without any disruption to the operation.

Business Capital

Unless you want to start small, you will need about N1million and above to start. This will cover the cost of equipment, office location and other logistics.

Profitability

My  findings revealed that, though this services don’t come often, but when it finally come, it is well paid for.

To do a general office cleaning, such entrepreneur charges  between N100,000 and N500,000 and above. The fees charged depends on the nature of the office or home, the level of work to be done, the location and so on.
