Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has said that former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has been humbed by karma following his current trial over alleged money laundering.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Adeyanju stated that Malami, who once held immense power as Nigeria’s chief law officer, failed to uphold the rule of law while in office.
“Malami didn’t believe in rule of law even as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and didn’t obey several court orders as AGF. Look at him today, reduced to absolutely nothing by karma. Those in power always forget they will soon be out of power,” Adeyanju wrote.
Adeyanju’s remarks came as Malami, his wife, and son are remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja until January 7, 2026, when their bail applications will be decided.
Recall that Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja gave the order last Friday after hearing arguments for and against their bail applications in connection with a N9 billion corruption case filed against them by the Federal Government.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Malami, his son Abdulaziz, and one of his wives, Asabe Bashir, on December 30, 2025, on a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering involving about N9billion worth of suspicious assets.
According to the charges, the EFCC accused the defendants of acquiring and concealing multi-billion-naira assets in FCT Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi States. The anti-graft agency also traced more than N200billion worth of properties, including a university, hotel, and several residential houses to the former minister.
The EFCC further alleged that Ms. Bashir was an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Ltd., a company linked to Malami, which was said to have played a key role in the money laundering transactions.
All three defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Justice Nwite subsequently ordered that they be remanded in Kuje prison pending the ruling on their bail applications scheduled for Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
