The Citizens and Economic Freedom Rights Activists in Nigeria (CEFRAN) has urged the federal government to initiate independent leadership at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other oil and gas agencies.
The coalition also called for an independent judicial inquiry to address concerns surrounding the recent importation of adulterated fuel.
At a press briefing in Abuja, CEFRAN’s convener, Obinna Francis, expressed concern over the fuel quality imported by Matrix Energy and its partners, emphasising the potential health risks associated with the distribution of substandard products.
“It is troubling that Nigeria, as Africa’s largest oil producer, faces challenges related to the quality of imported petrol. This situation underscores the need for stronger oversight and accountability in the sector,” Francis noted.
He further highlighted concerns about reports suggesting the blending of imported fuel in Malta before its distribution in Nigeria, urging the government to investigate these practices thoroughly.
CEFRAN stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the NNPCL and called on President Bola Tinubu to consider appointing an independent management team to oversee the investigation into the fuel importation issue.
The group underscored the need for a transparent and accountable fuel supply system that prioritises the interests of Nigerians. They encouraged citizens to support efforts to ensure justice and fairness in the sector.
“A comprehensive and independent investigation is essential to restore confidence in our fuel supply system and protect the well-being of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
CEFRAN also recommended that the Nigerian government enhance regulations and enforcement mechanisms to ensure that only high-quality fuel is supplied to the public, thereby safeguarding the health and prosperity of the nation.
