Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja yesterday sentenced a man, Nurudeen Nasiru, to life imprisonment for introducing a pornographic video to his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter and sexually assaulting her.
Justice Soladoye sent the convict to prison for the rest of his life after she held that the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt the two-count charge of defilement and indecent treatment of a child filed against him by the state government.
The Lagos State Ministry of Justice had thought one of its counsel, Olusola Soneye, stated the convict committed the offences on February 23, 2021, at about 3.45 p.m. on Aminu Street, Alapere, Ketu Lagos.
Soneye had called three witnesses: a social worker, the survivor and her father to prove the case, while the convict testified as a sole witness.
He also tendered the confessional statement of the convict as an exhibit by the prosecution.
In her judgment, Justice Soladoye held that the convict sexually assaulted the survivor through the anus and also introduced her to pornographic videos.
The judge stated, “The defendant was a neighbour who went to the room of the survivor and opened his phone to show her pornographic videos and afterwards forced her to practice what he had shown her on his phone.
“The defendant, in his confessional statement, admitted to having had sexual intercourse with the survivor,” the judge held.
The court further stated that the ingredients of the offence of sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child were thoroughly proven under Sections 261 and 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
She, therefore, convicted him of the two-count charge, “on count one of sexual assault by penetration, the defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment.
“On count two of indecent treatment of a child, the defendant is sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
“The sentencing shall run concurrently, and his name is to be entered into the Sexual Offenders Register maintained by Lagos State government,” Justice Soladoye held.
