A man, Chukwuma Onwe, of Nwezenyi Ibeagu in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State, is being held by the state police command for allegedly selling his five-day old child for N1.5 million.

The police spokesman in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the baby boy was recovered from the buyer, one Mr. Ugochukwu.

He said the father of the child was arrested alongside the buyer on Friday at Azugwu area of Abakaliki local government area of the state, and he is currently in police custody.

“Mr Chukwuma Onwe sold his five-day-old son for N1.5m to Mrs. Chinyere Ugochukwu. They were arrested by the police on Friday, Oct 10,” the police spokesman said, “Chukwuma resides at Azugwu area of Abakaliki LGA. He took the child away from Mrs Philomena Iroko, his wife-to-be under threat and sold him.”

He said the man lied that he gave the child to his sister to take care of him. SP Ukandu said the command was investigating the matter while the child had been reunited with his mother.
