Man Utd Had ‘No Genuine Excuse’ Not To Sign Osimhen – Onazi

Former Nigerian international Ogenyi Onazi has asserted that Manchester United had no legitimate reason to pass on signing Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen when the opportunity arose.

The Red Devils were reportedly keen on acquiring the Nigerian international but purportedly made a U-turn, citing his participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations as a key factor.

Reacting to this development, Onazi, speaking to Footy-Africa, emphasised Osimhen’s status as a top-tier striker coveted by clubs globally.

“For me, I don’t think that’s an excuse for them not to sign Victor,” Onazi exclusively told Footy-Africa. “If they truly understood his importance and what he could bring to Manchester United, that shouldn’t have been a barrier.”

He continued, “There are other crucial players at Manchester United and other clubs, like Mo Salah at Liverpool, who also participate in the Africa Cup of Nations. It’s only a month. You can’t tell me that his absence for the tournament should be a deciding factor, especially given their struggles from the start of the season despite significant investment.”

Onazi concluded, “It’s only recently they’ve found their footing. Victor would have been a vital player and could have made a significant impact before and after the tournament. To me, it makes no sense that they let this chance slip. The idea that his potential involvement in the Nations Cup was why they didn’t sign him is, in my opinion, just a flimsy excuse.”
