Manchester United’s hierarchy is increasingly confident that they can beat local rivals Manchester City to the signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, according to sources close to the club.

The Red Devils have already begun reshaping their squad under manager Michael Carrick, securing their first summer arrival—Brazilian midfielder Ederson—from Atalanta for £35 million.

But Carrick is far from done. With Casemiro having already left Old Trafford and Manuel Ugarte potentially following him out the door this summer, the United boss is pushing for at least one more midfield reinforcement.

That search has led them directly into the City’s path. The reigning Premier League champions had identified Anderson as their top summer target and have already seen an opening offer of £80 million rejected by Nottingham Forest. City are expected to return with an improved bid, but United believe the race is far from over.

As reported by The Guardian, United’s board is now “optimistic” about hijacking City’s move for the 22-year-old. Club officials feel that Anderson has yet to make a definitive decision on his future, and they are confident that Carrick’s project—and the prospect of regular first-team football—could still sway the English midfielder in their favour.

Anderson, who came through Newcastle United’s academy, joined Nottingham Forest in 2024 on a five-year contract.

He has since developed into one of the most dynamic young midfielders in the country, attracting interest from both Manchester clubs ahead of what promises to be a fiercely contested summer transfer battle.
