Man Who Set Mother Ablaze Know Fate Tomorrow

A middle-aged man, Stephen Jiya, who allegedly set his biological mother ablaze last year will know his fate tomorrow at the High Court 1, Minna, Niger State.

The judgement will be delivered by the chief judge of the state, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik.

Jiya was arrested by the operatives of the Homicide Squad of the Niger State Police Command for allegedly setting his mother, Mrs Comfort Jiya, a retired school principal in the state Ministry of Education ablaze. The mother who resided in Dutsen Kura area of Minna, the Niger State capital died instantly from the incident.

The accused was arraigned before the Minna Chief Magistrate Court 1 on holding charge pending his final arraignment in the High Court by the Office of the Attorney-General for prosecution on culpable homicide punishable under section 221 of the penal code.

The director of public prosecution in the ministry of justice has advised that he should be charged before the High Court for proper prosecution by the provision of section 221 of the penal code.

The Office of the Attorney-general of Niger State formally charged him to court on September 14, 2022, and Wednesday, December 13 was slated for the delivery of the judgement by the chief judge of Niger State tomorrow.

In his last appearance in court, the legal team from the attorney-general’s office, closed its case while his defence counsel also closed his case which Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik then adjourned until 13 December 2023 for judgment.

Six witnesses including two members of the family and Jiya’s younger sister had testified against the defendant during the trial.
