Many people have been feared dead in a clash between soldiers from the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze and some youths at Izombe community in Oguta local government area of Imo State.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the incident took place yesterday after soldiers were drafted to the oil-community to checkmate criminality in the vicinity.
Sources, however, confirmed that the attack was launched by the youths of the community.
It was made known that the youths had two days ago attacked and killed a truck driver which ignited increased patrol by the soldiers in the area.
However, the youths were said to have attacked the patrol team, which resulted in heavy shooting.
As at the time of submitting this report, sporadic shootings were said to be going on in within the Oguta community.
A native of the area who does not want his name mentioned, confirmed the incident, describing same as an “invasion.”
Spokesperson of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, Captain Joseph Akubo, who confirmed the incident, however, denied that soldiers stormed the community.
He stressed that the youths attacked the soldiers who were on a normal patrol following increased criminal activities in the area.
According to him, he is yet to ascertain the casualty figure as the youths are still engaging the soldiers in serious battle.
His words: “The soldiers were on routine patrol in the area when they came under attack by the youths. Two days ago, a Dangote Truck driver was killed and coupled with other criminal activities, which had necessitated increased patrol. So as the soldiers were on normal exercise, they came under attack.
“I cannot tell you the casualty figure because the youth are still attacking our men and taking cover in the buildings in the neighbourhood.”
A military source who pleaded anonymity said there was heavy shooting in the community even as many were feared dead and several properties including the market had been razed down.
Already, many had escaped with injuries and were hiding in bushes.
