Maryam Shettima Ibrahim, widely known as Maryam Shetty, is a Nigerian physiotherapist, social development advocate and public policy enthusiast from Kano State.

Her career spans healthcare delivery, youth empowerment, governance advocacy and philanthropy. She represents a generation of Northern Nigerian professionals who have moved from clinical and technical professions into broader civic engagement and national development discourse.

Born in Kano State in April 1979, Maryam Shetty’s early life was shaped by a strong emphasis on education, discipline and public service.

She spent her formative years in Kano, where she began her primary and secondary education before pursuing higher studies in health sciences.

Her academic journey led her into physiotherapy, a discipline she would later develop into a professional calling.

Maryam obtained foundational training in physiotherapy in Nigeria before advancing her studies internationally. She later earned a Master’s degree in Sports Physiotherapy from the University of East London in the United Kingdom.

Her academic portfolio also includes additional professional and policy-oriented certifications, including training in non-violence practice from Emory University in the United States and exposure to public policy studies at the University of Virginia. These academic experiences provided her with a multidisciplinary outlook that combines healthcare practice with civic leadership and governance awareness.

Maryam Shetty’s professional career began in clinical physiotherapy, where she worked in rehabilitation and sports medicine. Her expertise positioned her within elite sports environments, and she was part of medical support teams involved in high-performance athletic settings, including international competitions.

Her professional background reflects a strong orientation toward physical rehabilitation, injury management and sports science, particularly in supporting athletes’ recovery and performance optimisation.

Beyond clinical practice, she expanded into public health programming and international development work. Maryam has contributed to health-related initiatives supported by development partners, including programmes linked to UKAid interventions focused on strengthening health systems and improving access to essential healthcare services.

She also served in medical capacities within government health facilities, including engagements associated with the State House Clinic in Abuja, where she was involved in supporting healthcare delivery within a high-level institutional environment.

Over time, Maryam Shetty transitioned into broader public engagement, particularly in governance, civic participation and political advocacy. She became active within the political space through the All Progressives Congress (APC), where she participated in campaign and policy-related activities.

Her involvement in political structures brought her into national visibility, especially through her role in the APC Presidential Campaign Council, where she contributed to engagement strategies focused on youth participation and civic awareness.

Her public profile rose further in 2023 when she was briefly nominated for a ministerial position in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Although her nomination was later withdrawn during cabinet adjustments, the development placed her at the centre of national political discourse and highlighted her emergence as a figure within Nigeria’s evolving governance landscape.
