The Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has paid glowing tribute to members of the Nigerian Defence Academy’s 18 Regular Course (18RC) during their 50th reunion anniversary in Abuja.

The event, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, brought together military veterans, national leaders, and esteemed dignitaries to celebrate five decades of unity, leadership, and service.

Matawalle, speaking as the Special Guest of Honour, praised the course members for their enduring bond and continued contributions to nation-building.

He commended His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, a member of 18RC, alongside other prominent figures such as Lt Gen Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd), and Major General Ike Nwachukwu (Rtd).

The Minister reflected on the course’s journey, which began in 1975 with 149 cadets from both the Regular Combatant and Short Service Courses.

“Out of the 149 who began, only 47 are alive today,” Matawalle stated. “We thank God for His mercies and pray for the repose of the souls of the departed.”

He also acknowledged the role of the Course President, who currently chairs the Ministry of Defence Veterans Welfare Committee.

Matawalle emphasised the often-overlooked value of retired military officers in civil roles, describing their post-service impact as “commendable and duly acknowledged.”

The Defence Minister urged other NDA alumni groups to emulate the unity and spirit of the 18RC, describing their bond as a model for national cohesion.

“This event shows what can be achieved through unity within a course,” he said, encouraging similar gatherings that promote solidarity and national service.

The anniversary was attended by top officials, including National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.

The 18RC commenced military training at the NDA in Kaduna on 30 June 1975, marking a half-century of distinguished service by its members.

Matawalle concluded his address by offering prayers for the departed and wishing the course many more years of health, peace, and continued relevance.
