The Kano State government has said maternal mortality in the state has dropped from 1,025 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2025 to 570, following sustained healthcare interventions and support from development partners.

The director-general, Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Prof Salisu Ibrahim, disclosed this on Friday during the virtual commissioning of the revitalised Gadon Gaya Primary Health Care Centre in Kano.

The project, implemented by the Kano State government with support from the World Bank-backed IMPACT Project, was virtually inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu, while Governor Abba Yusuf was represented at the event by prof Ibrahim.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ibrahim attributed the reduction in maternal mortality to collaborative efforts by the state government, the federal government and development partners.

“It is worth noting that Kano State has really recorded successful strides in improving maternal mortality. As of last year, 2025, maternal mortality rate was 1,025 live births per 100,000 births. As of today, we are speaking about 570, which has actually crashed maternal mortality,” he said.

He described the Gadon Gaya facility as one of the 187 revitalised primary healthcare centres under Tinubu’s healthcare intervention programme.

According to him, the state has revitalised over 350 primary healthcare facilities through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, the IMPACT Project and interventions by partners, including FCDO Lafiya, UNICEF and GAVI.

He added that more than 500 primary healthcare facilities across the state had now been renovated, rebuilt or revitalised.

Ibrahim also said the state had recorded improvements in immunisation coverage and a reduction in the number of zero-dose children.

He commended the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for supporting community mobilisation efforts aimed at improving healthcare delivery.

In his remarks, the project manager of the IMPACT Project, Dr Nura Ganduje, said the commissioning of the facility represented improved access to healthcare services for residents.

He explained that the IMPACT Project, supported by the World Bank and other partners, was designed to tackle preventable deaths among women and children through improved immunisation, maternal and child healthcare services, malaria interventions and stronger primary healthcare systems.

Ganduje said the Gadon Gaya PHC was among 187 facilities revitalised under the project in Kano State.

“We are not just revitalising facilities; we are transforming lives and securing a healthier future for generations to come,” he said.
