France captain Kylian Mbappé has warned against complacency despite inspiring Les Bleus to a convincing 3-1 victory over Senegal in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match.

The Real Madrid forward produced another outstanding display, scoring twice as France launched their campaign with a comfortable win over the African side.

Bradley Barcola also found the net for Didier Deschamps’ men, while Ibrahim Mbaye scored Senegal’s lone goal in an entertaining Group I encounter.

Although pleased with the result, Mbappé stressed that France must remain focused as they pursue a third World Cup title.

“You can never be comfortable in the World Cup,” the 27-year-old said after the match.

“As seen in other matches, winning the first game is very difficult.”

The French skipper also reaffirmed his desire to leave a lasting mark on international football, making it clear that personal achievements are secondary to collective success.

“I play to make history for my country,” Mbappé declared.

“But the most important goal is to help France win the World Cup.”

France entered the tournament among the favourites and justified that status with a composed performance against a determined Senegalese side.

Mbappé’s pace, movement and clinical finishing once again proved decisive, underlining why he remains one of the most feared forwards in world football.

Despite the encouraging start, the former Paris Saint-Germain star insisted there is still plenty of work to do.

“This is just the first match of the group stage,” he said. “We must always maintain composure regarding what we need to do.”

France now turn their attention to their next fixture against Iraq on Monday, with Mbappé expected to lead the charge once again as Les Bleus seek to build momentum towards the knockout rounds.

Having reached the final in each of the last two World Cups, France are determined to go one step further this time, and if Mbappé maintains his current form, they will remain one of the leading contenders for the trophy.
