The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has approved an increase in the admission quota for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programmes of the University of Abuja from 75 to 200.

The announcement was made by the registrar of the council, Professor Fatima Kyari, following a re-accreditation exercise conducted by a team of 17 MDCN members at the university.

LEADERSHIP earlier reported that in January 2024, the federal government directed medical and nursing schools to increase their student intake by 100% to address brain drain.

The directive was conveyed through a letter from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) which instructed accredited medical schools to double their student intake starting in 2024.

In a press statement yesterday by Dr. Habib Yakoob, the acting director, information and university relations, Kyari commended the university for its efforts to improve its facilities, while also pointing out the need for further development in key areas including the number and capacity of resource persons, pathology labs, transportation, and clinical skills support.
