The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the Sokoto State governor’s and the State House of Assembly’s ongoing move to amend the Sokoto Emirate Council Laws.

The group said the amendments to the Sokoto Emirate Council Law are intended to whittle down the powers of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhamdulillah Sa’ad Abubakar, to exercise his rights as the Sultan of Sokoto and desecrate the Sultanate Council.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, the group maintained that the Sultan has the right to appoint district heads, village heads and all traditional title holders in Sokoto State.

It added that “any attempt to amend the law and subject such rights to the approval of the Sokoto State government is to politicise the Sokoto Emirate Council appointments, which would surely destroy the enviable and valuable tradition of the people of Sokoto State.”

The group noted that the ongoing Sokoto Emirate Council Law amendment by the Sokoto State House of Assembly could escalate the country’s insecurity problems.

“This is why MMWG is calling on President Bola Tinubu to stop Governor Ahmed Aliyu from proceeding with the amendment process and withdrawing the bill,” the group said.
