British boxing veteran Derek Chisora has said that he is using prescribed medical cannabis to manage chronic body pain caused by his 20-year career in professional boxing.
The 42-year-old heavyweight disclosed that decades of hard hits in the ring have left him battling long-term discomfort across his body, especially from his knees down to his hands.
Chisora shared his experience during the launch of WarOnPain, a new platform aimed at educating people suffering from long-term illnesses about the legal medical cannabis system in the United Kingdom.
“People see the fights, the knockouts, the entertainment. What they don’t see is what happens afterwards, the years your body carries the damage, the recovery and the pain you live with every day. When you’re younger, your body recovers quickly. But now I’m in my 40s, after more than 20 years in boxing, I regularly deal with chronic pain from my knees to my hands,” he said.
The boxer also said that his usage is strictly for health reasons and is monitored by medical professionals, separating his campaign from using the substance for fun.
“This isn’t about recreational cannabis. It’s about access to proper medical treatment in a safe and regulated way,” he added.
According to the details shared, Chisora’s treatment involves a specific dosage of dry cannabis flower prescribed by a specialist doctor, which he takes using a medical vaporiser.
The former champion stated that his main goal is to support retired athletes, military veterans, and members of the public who are silently dealing with constant physical and mental challenges.
“And this goes far beyond boxing. I know former athletes, veterans and people from all walks of life who are struggling quietly every day, physically and mentally. Many feel like they’ve run out of options,” he stated.
