Meta Lays Off 8,000 Employees Amid Major Artificial Intelligence Restructure

Meta Platforms has made approximately 8,000 employees redundant as part of a wide-ranging internal restructuring aimed at repositioning the company as an artificial intelligence-focused organisation.
The redundancies, which account for nearly 10 per cent of Meta’s global workforce, reportedly began across regions including Asia, Europe and the United States, with affected employees receiving notification emails in the early hours of the morning.
The restructuring comes as chief executive Mark Zuckerberg continues to push the company further into artificial intelligence development, repeatedly describing AI as the most critical technology shaping Meta’s future.
Alongside the redundancies, the company has also redeployed around 7,000 employees to newly created AI-driven projects and initiatives, signalling a broader transformation of its operations and workforce structure.
Reports indicate that the transition has raised concerns amongst workers, with many employees reportedly anxious about job security and the growing use of artificial intelligence systems within Meta’s internal operations and staff training processes.
Some members of staff have also reportedly objected to internal data collection practices linked to AI development. According to reports, petitions have circulated across several offices calling for greater transparency and stricter limits on how employee data is collected and used.
Despite workforce reductions, Meta continues to significantly expand its investment in artificial intelligence. The company has announced plans to spend more than $100 billion this year on AI-related infrastructure, research and product development as competition intensifies amongst major global technology companies.
Zuckerberg has defended the restructuring strategy, stating that the companies leading the artificial intelligence race will shape the next generation of technology and digital services. Whilst acknowledging employee concerns, he insisted the transition is essential for Meta’s long-term competitiveness.
