The Africa College of Bishops of the United Methodist Church (UMC) has called on the global church to stand united in prayers for crisis-ridden countries in Africa.

The call became necessary due to the growing concerns over the ongoing violence in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Northern Mozambique, Sudan and South Sudan.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the Bishops’ Conference, held in Luanda, Angola, a copy of which was made available to LEADERSHIP in Jalingo, Taraba State.

About 17 active and retired bishops of the UMC, including Bishop Mande Muyombo, president of the Africa College of Bishops, are signatory to the communique.

The communique advocated for peace and reconciliation across conflict stricken countries for the well-being of their citizens.

It however commended the leadership of African Union Chairperson, João Lourenço, for his effort to mediate and resolve regional conflicts.

According to the communique, discussions at the conference also focused on shared goals around promoting peace and sustainable development across the African continent.

They, however reaffirmed their commitment to a united global church, while supporting regional autonomy and the contextualization of ministry practices.

“This approach strengthens unity by honouring diversity within the global UMC,” the communique said.
