Methodist Church of Nigeria has called on the federal government to rethink the hike in electricity tariff as it will have a ripple effect on businesses and households.

In a communique issued at the end of its 12th annual synod held at Kubwa Diocese, the church also called on the government to expedite action on implementing a new national minimum wage that will enable workers to realign with the prevailing economic realities and engender industrial peace.

The communique signed by the Bishop of Kubwa Diocese, Rt Rev Chikwendu Ogan Igwe, and two others emphasised the need for government at all levels to work toward empowering the youths to make them self-reliant.

The church also reminded the government about the need to go ahead with the national census planned by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari for the country to have accurate population figures for proper planning and distribution of resources.

It charged political officeholders to focus on delivering the dividends of democracy while also asking the government to exercise a strong political will in bringing corrupt officials to book.

The church further demanded a multi-dimensional approach to tackle the growing insecurity in the country and a sustainable action plan to cushion the harsh effect of fuel subsidy removal.

The synod with the theme: “Arise and build”, asked Christians to always stand up for what is right and build families that will enhance nation-building.
