Federal Ministry of Environment has commenced a retreat for chairmen and members of the governing boards of its agencies ahead of their inauguration today.

At the opening session of the retreat in Abuja, the ministry’s permanent secretary, Malam Mahmud Adam Kambari, who was represented by the director of Legal Services, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Salako, said the training aims to deepen the understanding of the agencies’ mandates and aligns with strategic priorities before the boards are inaugurated.

“This retreat provides an invaluable platform for reflection, engagement, and preparation ahead of your official inauguration. It is also an opportunity to share best practices and devise innovative approaches to accelerate the attainment of our environmental goals,” he said.

Kambari reminded the incoming board members that their roles go beyond oversight, adding that it requires them to help drive effective governance, policy innovation, and performance across environmental protection, climate action as well as biodiversity, and pollution control.

He emphasised that the boards’ work must reflect President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which, he said, champions sustainable development, environmental resilience, and economic growth through a healthier ecosystem.

While revealing that the formal inauguration ceremony is scheduled to take place today, in Abuja the permanent secretary urged participants to commit to transparency, accountability, and data-driven decision-making in carrying out their responsibilities.
