Former Super Eagles defender, Joseph Yobo, has revealed that not qualifying for the World Cup in 2006 had a negative impact on the players’ careers.
The former Everton defender expressed disappointment that the Super Eagles missed out of the tournament.
The former international said this while speaking on the current challenges facing the Super Eagles.
is no longer news that the Super Eagles are walking a tight rope in their bid to qualify for the 2026 tournament as they are currently third place in Grade C of the African qualifying series.
He told Brila FM, “I feel horrible because something similar happened during our time.
“We were young, a strong generation, and missing the 2006 World Cup affected our careers.”
Yobo played for Nigeria at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.However, his hopes of playing in the 2006 World Cup was dashed as the Super Eagles failed to qualify.
“We had just come off the 2002 tournament, and that continuity would have helped many of us move to bigger clubs. Missing that World Cup was a setback.”
