Major League Soccer has launched an investigation into Inter Miami over allegations of tampering following the club’s high-profile signing of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star completed his move to the Florida club on Wednesday, signing a contract until the end of the 2027 MLS season, with an option to extend until June 2029.
However, shortly after announcing the transfer, MLS confirmed it had opened a formal review into the circumstances surrounding the deal.
League officials are examining whether Inter Miami breached regulations relating to Casemiro’s discovery rights, a mechanism that grants an MLS club first refusal over certain overseas players wishing to join the league.
LA Galaxy previously held Casemiro’s discovery rights before reaching a settlement with Inter Miami, although details of that agreement will remain confidential until the investigation concludes.
Casemiro departed Manchester United after both parties agreed not to extend his contract beyond the 2026-27 campaign. During his time at Old Trafford, he made 160 appearances, winning both the FA Cup and EFL Cup, having previously lifted five UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid.
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham welcomed the Brazilian, describing him as “a winner” whose experience would further strengthen the club.
Casemiro joins an impressive squad featuring Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and former team-mate Sergio Reguilón.
The investigation revives memories of Inter Miami’s previous disciplinary issues. In 2021, the club received a $2 million fine for breaching MLS salary regulations following the signing of French midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
MLS has stated that no further comment will be made until its review is completed.
