Filmmaker and media entrepreneur Mo Abudu has mourned veteran actor Olu Jacobs, describing him as one of the “true giants” of African cinema, theatre and television.

Jacobs’ family announced his death at the age of 84 on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, describing him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and appealing to the public to respect their privacy.

Reacting to his death, Abudu paid tribute to the late actor in a statement shared on social media, recalling his decades-long contribution to the entertainment industry.

She described Jacobs as more than an accomplished actor, noting that his career spanned the stage, Nigerian film and television, as well as international productions.

According to Abudu, Jacobs brought “depth, dignity and humanity” to his roles and became one of the most recognisable figures in African storytelling.

She also praised his influence on younger generations of actors and filmmakers, saying his contribution to the industry and global storytelling would remain memorable.

“His work will continue to live on, and so will the memories of the man behind the legend,” she said.

Abudu expressed gratitude for having witnessed Jacobs’ talent and experienced his warmth, dignity and grace, adding that he would be deeply missed.

Jacobs had a career spanning more than five decades across theatre, television and film in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before working in British theatre and television and later becoming a prominent figure in Nollywood.

Throughout his career, Jacobs received several honours, including the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) and the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Abudu’s tribute comes amid a wave of condolences from colleagues and other industry figures who have continued to honour Jacobs’ contribution to the Nigerian and African entertainment industry.
