South Africa’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup suffered a major setback after midfield maestro Teboho Mokoena was ruled out of the team’s final Group match against South Korea.
The Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker picked up his second yellow card of the tournament in the 33rd minute of Thursday’s 1‑1 draw with Czechia. Having already been cautioned in the opening fixture against Mexico, the booking triggered an automatic one‑match suspension under tournament rules.
Mokoena’s absence will be a significant blow for coach Hugo Broos. The midfielder has been central to Bafana Bafana’s campaign, scoring the equaliser against Czechia that earned South Africa a valuable point and kept alive their slim hopes of progression.
His creativity threat have been vital assets, and his suspension leaves a gap in both defensive stability and attacking transitions.
With South Africa needing a win against South Korea to stand any realistic chance of reaching the round of 16, the pressure is now on the rest of the squad to step up.
