Morocco have reinforced their status as Africa’s leading football nation by becoming the continent’s highest earners across the last two FIFA World Cups, pocketing a combined $58 million in prize money from their outstanding performances at the 2022 and 2026 tournaments.

The Atlas Lions collected $31.5 million for reaching the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding to the $26.5 million they earned after their historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 finals in Qatar.

Their 2026 earnings comprised a $10 million participation fee, a $2.5 million tournament preparation grant, and $19 million in performance-based prize money for progressing to the last eight.

The latest payout underlines Morocco’s remarkable consistency on the world stage. After becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach a FIFA World Cup semi-final in Qatar four years ago, the North Africans followed up with another impressive run in 2026 to further establish themselves as the continent’s standard-bearers.

Morocco’s campaign ended in the quarter-finals following a 2-0 defeat to France, with Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé scoring as Les Bleus once again ended the Atlas Lions’ World Cup dream by the same scoreline that ended their historic semi-final run in 2022.

France have progressed to a third successive World Cup semi-final, where they will face Spain.

Among Africa’s other representatives at the 2026 tournament, Egypt recorded the second-highest earnings after receiving $17.5 million for reaching the Round of 16.

Their back-to-back deep runs have not only enhanced the country’s footballing reputation but have also delivered a record financial windfall unmatched by any other African nation.
