Nigerian actress Osas Ighodaro has opened up about a painful chapter in her life when she was cheated on by an ex-boyfriend while living in the United States.
Speaking on the ‘Lone Wolf’ podcast, Ighodaro described the ordeal as “devastating,” recalling that she had imagined a future with the man she thought she would spend her life with.
She recounted driving all the way to Baltimore to surprise him, only to discover another woman, who was pregnant, in his room, and being escorted out by a security guard after confronting him.
“After getting a new car, I drove all the way to Baltimore to surprise my then-boyfriend. I stood at his door for about five minutes waiting for him to answer. Five minutes might not seem long, but in that moment, it felt like forever. He finally opened the door, and I said, ‘What took you so long? Surprise! Aren’t you happy to see me?’” she recalled.
“His response was, ‘Why didn’t you say you were coming?’ I thought he’d be happy that I drove all the way to see him, especially since I had just bought this car. I tried to go to his room, but the door was locked. I asked why, and he said he had a friend there. I told him to come out, and he said it was a girl, not a guy. I asked why he had a girl in his room, and he told me to sit down.
“I started shouting. At that point, he called the complex security to escort me out, telling me he didn’t want me to get in trouble for fighting a pregnant woman,” Ighodaro said.
The actress described the heartbreak as overwhelming.
“My whole world collapsed. I’ve always been a lover, someone who puts my all into relationships. This was devastating for me. It was young love, someone, I thought I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but clearly, he, or maybe God, had other plans,” she reflected.
Looking back, Ighodaro said she sees the experience as a hidden blessing. She explained that moving to Baltimore with him would not have aligned with her bigger ambitions.
“I finally see it as a blessing because we were already having conversations and moving to Baltimore to live our lives, I always knew that wasn’t going to be enough for me. My dreams are global and big, and moving to Baltimore wouldn’t help me achieve them. I needed to be in New York, around creatives, for this to happen,” she said.
Ighodaro later married fellow Nigerian actor, Gbenro Ajibade, in 2015 after meeting on the set of Tinsel. The couple divorced in 2019, and they have a daughter together.
