The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has commenced reconstruction of the collapsed flood control embankment in Muye, Lapai LGA of Niger State, to check flooding.

It is meant to save the farmlands from the annual flood disasters that have affected economic activities in the area.

The acting managing director of N-HYPPADEC, Mr JImoh Haruna Gabi, while flagging off the project, said the construction would cost over N600 million.

Gabi said the commission would also reconstruct the access roads and reclaim the land destroyed by the flood, saying that the intention was to enable the farmers and fishermen to regain their footing and return to farming and fishing, which has been their age-long occupation.

According to him, the affected communities approached the N-HYPPADEC through the House of Representative member representing the Agaie/Lapai federal constituency, seeking a lasting solution to the problem.

The member representing Agaie/Lapai federal constituency, Abdullahi Mahmud, who was present, posited that the project would go a long way in restoring the economic fortunes of the farmers in the area.
