N-HYPPADEC Resettles Flood Prone Communities In Niger

The National Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has advanced the construction resettlement site for the Muregi people affected by floods annually as a result of excess discharge from hydro power dams in Niger State.

N-HYPPADEC managing director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa who led officials on inspection of the site yesterday, disclosed that there was a review by 100 percent of contracts for the building of the Muregi resettlement centre for flood victims in Mokwa local government of the state due to the current economic situation.

While ascertaining the level of work and compliance so far, he described it as satisfactory even as the work is a bit slow.

Sadiq Yelwa explained that the review became necessary due to escalating prices of building materials for the expected 200 units of two bedroom flats.

He said the 120 units was ongoing and 82 of the 200 units were at 60% to 80% completion stage, necessitating the review of the contract of each building upward to N12 million from the initial N6 million.

He stressed that none of the contractors is being owed by the commission, adding that they were happy with the review which is why they remain on site, noting that the target was to ensure its completion for occupation by the beneficiaries paying attention to NIMET and other agencies warning of flooding this year would be achieved.

The managing director also promised to renovate the residence of the district head and the mosque as well as provide health facility and a blocks of classrooms when buildings are occupied, saying the Bida Emirate, local government and the state government would be informed to facilitate allocation for f land to the benefiting communities for the public building interventions

He said the commission was committed to improving the lives of the people, adding the mission will not be compromised as a preventative and intervention agency.

He also disclosed that 60 of such housing units were being constructed for Ketso community in the same Mokwa local government area and 50 units in Shiroro; 30 units ongoing 100 targeted but added that insecurity is affecting the work.
